Parkinson’s Disease Awareness Month: Good Reminder for Long Term Care Planning | 2014

Events

This April, millions of people around the world will recognize April as Parkinson’s Awareness Month.

Parkinson’s disease is a movement disorder that is chronic and progressive and affects many in our own community. Not only that:

  • Nearly one million Americans are living with Parkinson’s.
  • Approximately 60,000 Americans are diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease each year, and this number does not reflect the thousands of cases that go undetected.
  • Seven to 10 million people worldwide are estimated to be living with Parkinson’s disease.
  • Incidence of Parkinson’s increases with age, but an estimated four percent of people with Parkinson’s are diagnosed before the age of 50.

Because Parkinson’s disease is a degeneration of the central nervous system, most people do end up needing some form of long-term care. Symptoms start with shaking, slowness, rigidity, and difficulty walking. Symptoms then progress to cognitive and behavioral problems and dementia is common.

At Bratton Law Group we are dedicated to helping our clients and their families ease the financial and emotional burden on those suffering from Parkinson’s disease. We can help plan for long term care needs and help protect your hard-earned assets.  We’d be happy to chat with you to determine which path – private pay, Medicaid, veteran’s benefits, or long term care insurance – is best for you.  The sooner you plan, the more we can help you.
